Carla Bley (piano), Steve Swallow (bass), Andy Sheppard (tenor sax, soprano sax)
Carla Bley is a fundamental figure in the history of post-bop revolution jazz for her talent as a composer, pianist and organist. In 1964 she founded with her husband, the trumpetist Michael Mantler, the Jazz Composers’ Orchestra, and in 1969 she began creating arrangements for Charlie Haden’s Liberation Music Orchestra. She has also maintained her own big band over the years, performing and recording in all kinds of formats. The Trios album was produced by the legendary Manfred Eicher, founder of the prestigious ECM label. Steve Swallow and Britain’s Andy Sheppard are Carla’s long-standing collaborators and perhaps the ones who best understand Bley the composer and Bley the pianist.
