Brad Mehldau (piano), Larry Grenadier (double bass), Jeff Ballard (drums)
Brad Mehldau is especially appreciated by the Heineken Jazzaldia audience, who has had the privilege of listening to him in two extraordinary concerts as a trio (2003) and solo piano (2009), as a member of the Jesse Davis (1993), Joshua Redman (1994) and Pat Metheny (2007) bands, and in his trio with John Scofield and Mark Guiliana two years ago. Mehldau’s musical personality is a dichotomy. He is, above all, an improviser with a fondness for the surprise and joy which can bounce off a spontaneous musical idea produced right there live on stage. But he also harbours a deep fascination for the formal architecture of music, and that influences everything he does. Mehldau’s recital, in the company of his regular trio, promises to be one of the most memorable at this year’s Festival.
